It's a dreary Monday morning for this facet of the YPOIW crew, so if you're in the mood for something mellow, have I got a treat for you.
Linear Bells is Nantes-based musician David Teboul, who has previously released material under the name Embark. His approach incorporates the meshing of traditional instruments like piano and guitar, field recordings, and electronic manipulation that ties everything else together. The result is some startlingly organic-sounding ambient pieces.
An Island, his most recent release, was inspired by a trip to the Chausey Islands, the recorded sounds of which can be found peppered throughout the music. The result is captivating, and I think this album could even appeal to listeners who tend to shy away from ambiance. The very full sounds serve to ground the music and demand attention, and there's also more of a narrative and melodic flow to the pieces than you might expect.
Listen and/or download via Bandcamp below. You can even purchase the album as a cassette, if that's your bag.
