TRACK / MUSIC VIDEO: Sigur Rós - "Brennisteinn"

Sigur Rós made a live and studio return in 2012 with Valtari, and clearly they wasted no time in following that up. Kveikur is the name of the new record, and the now-three piece has stated that this album sports a more "aggressive" sound for the band. This is definitely represented on the first track to drop from the record "Brennisteinn", which is also the opening track. The band starts everything off with a bang, forgoing the crescendo for throbbing bass, pounding drums, and a genuinely dire and dramatic atmosphere that surrounds the entire 7-minute affair. However frontman Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson sneaks in his trademark falsetto in a cool down in the middle of the track, and still finds a way to make it fit beautifully.

In a way this track is everything Valtari wasn't; loud, climactic, and in the band's own special way, "aggressive". I very much liked their last record but the band seems to be bringing together a huge change of pace here, and that change is very much welcome. Check out the track below accompanied by one of the most beautifully shot music videos I've seen so far in 2013, and look out for Kveikur when it drops on June 17 internationally and June 18 in the U.S.

FRAMES PER SECOND VIDEO: Let's Play Aerobiz: Supersonic

Of all the business strategy/simulation games that exist on the Super Nintendo, none has managed to impress me as much as the Aerobiz series. It's really a game that has no business existing on the platform as simulation games of the day were largely relegated to home computers. Even today it's a genre that exists in far greater numbers on platforms such as iOS/Android and PC over home consoles. It's just so hard come up with an interface that works on a controller that feels intuitive enough for you to quickly make decisions.

Anyway, I played Aerobiz: Supersonic for half an hour... check it out.

FRAMES PER SECOND VIDEO: Let's Play KEYBOARD DRUMSET FUCKING WEREWOLF

Hey guys, I wanted to show you an insane freeware PC game that I found awhile back. Watch me fail for about 15 minutes to beat the WarioWare-esque game before giving up and showing you a YouTube video of someone actually beating it. Stay tuned for my opinion on whatever SONY tells us about the new PlayStation next weekend.

FRAMES PER SECOND VIDEO: Let's Play Cruis'n USA

Here is the first installment of what I hope to be a regular side-feature of Frames Per Second in which I play older games and commentate over them. I think it's important to highlight great old games, but I don't always have the time or desire to write an entire post on them. First up is the N64 port of the wonderful arcade racer Cruis'n USA, a game that admittedly looks pretty dumb compared to the racing games of today. It's certainly a game with simple mechanics and not a ton of depth, but it's got something a lot of racing games of it's day didn't have... endless nonsensical fun. I still think it holds up, and definitely play it with a friend if you can because it's one of the best split screen racing games available on any platform.

HEAVY FRIENDS: Rungs in a Ladder: Jacob Bannon of Converge

(HEAVY FRIENDS is the segment where Robby blurbs on about the latest and greatest in the worlds of underground metal, hardcore, and other forms of heavy music. Today we'll be talking about something a big different though...)

I'm sure it's no secret by now that Converge are easily one of the most important bands to me and one of my favorites in hardcore, metal, metalcore, etc. music. The central figure in the act is vocalist/lyricist/artist Jacob Bannon, and Ian McFarland, director of the fantastic Noisey documentary One Man Metal, put together a 12 minute piece on the Converge frontman. Here, Bannon shows a side of him you don't see in his manic performances on stage; it's an intimate, vulnerable side that many hardcore frontmen would be hesitant to let show. For a hardcore Converge fan like myself it's very moving but it's still a very interesting watch for someone not as familiar or enamored with Bannon's work as I am. Check it out below, and let me know what you think!

YOUR PODCAST OPINION IS WRONG #38: "Steve-Voice"

On this week's episode of the podcast Robby, Nick, and Steve talk about various music before talking about John Zorn's Naked City at great length... again. Nick also tries his best hand at impersonating Steve to what we all agree is great success. Sorry about the audio issues again, but you really shouldn't expect anything better from us.

To hear this week's episode I recommend you take the time to find YPOIW on iTunes. If you prefer it a direct download can be found here.

SPECIAL NOTE:
I apologize that nobody posted episode 37 on the blog, I was away on vacation at the time. If you'd like to hear this "lost" episode, it is also available on our iTunes feed or as a convenient direct download here.

VIDEO: Earl Sweatshirt - "Chum"

It's hard to believe that just last year we were chanting "Free Earl" and wondering if the famed Odd Future member would ever come back to the rap game and release new music. Thankfully this year Earl Sweatshirt has been making quite the comeback, dropping a handful of tracks sporadically, doing feature spots left and right, and hinting towards a new album, while seeming to be one of the more forward thinking members of the Odd Future rap clique. And as of now, we have the title of his newest album, and a video for what I'm assuming is the first released track for it, "Chum".

The Earl we're getting here is different from the playfully violent and (mock) misogynistic Earl we got on his 2010 mixtape. "Chum" shows a more introspective, and perhaps a more melancholic Earl, and it's a breath of fresh air to me after hearing nothing but meaningless and soulless Odd Future releases for the past couple years. This music video has to be one of my favorites of 2012, the cinematography is starkly beautiful, and the usage of black and white is somewhat reminiscent of Tyler, the Creator's famed "Yonkers" video, but it's clear this one isn't played for shock value. I can only see things going up for Earl Sweatshirt in the future, and I am very excited for Doris, due out supposedly sometime next year.

(Give a shout out to your favorite old chum @ClydeNut; yes I did just make that into a pun)

YOUR PODCAST OPINION IS WRONG #36: "Godzilla Dad"

On this long overdue episode of the podcast we attempt to sound coherent and generate interesting conversation but instead we just talk about how terrible we are. Things pick up a bit when Alex busts out his genre game. After all that momentum things start to get really weird when we dive back into lightning round and get endlessly distracted by YouTube videos and crazy tangents.

To hear this week's episode of the podcast please look for YPOIW on iTunes. If you want a direct download please click HERE.

YOUR PODCAST OPINION IS WRONG #33: "F*** This Oatmeal!"

In which Josh finally makes his triumphant return to the podcast, and proceeds to incessantly fight with Robby about mustaches. Their only common ground is a mutual disdain for a certain soggy breakfast item. 2 music podcasters enter, and only one can leave.

LIVE REVIEW: FYF Fest 2012

Two weekends ago I was lucky enough to attend this year's FYF Fest in Los Angeles, CA, where I got to see M83, Refused, Fucked Up, Cloud Nothings, and dozens of other great bands. Then I made a video about it, and waited a week to upload it, just cause I can.

Enjoy.

(Robby might make more YouTube vids in the future if he feels like it. In the meantime you can follow him on twitter @ClydeNut and subscribe to his YouTube channel MrSplatterPlatter)
