TRACK: Oneohtrix Point Never - "I Only Have Eyes for You"

As part of visual artist Doug Aitken's "Happening" events, Daniel Lopatin's Oneohtrix Point Never project has contributed a track to Aitken's Song 1 project, which will feature various artists' takes on the famed song "I Only Have Eyes for You." OPN's version is available to stream via the SoundCloud widget below.

It's difficult to imagine exactly how Lopatin heard this interpretation in the original, but given his recent endeavors on last year's Replica, it's not a particularly surprising one. However, although this track shares with that album the bond between ambient and sample-based music, it also finds Lopatin experimenting further with these ideas. Specifically, the female vocal samples that lead the song are cut up in a frantic and highly glitch-like fashion, and although Lopatin was no stranger to finding abstract ways to edit samples on Replica, the manner in which he does so here feels even more exploratory. The astonishing part is that he is able to make such an unconventional piece of music so emotionally affecting. With such a potent combination of experimentation and approachability under his belt, Lopatin has the potential for quite an interesting future.
